Artist’s Statement
Joe Webster is an award winning, international artist who works in acrylics and spray paint blending landscape painting with graffiti.
His paintings are created plein-air, in the dramatic and challenging great outdoors. Not being a ‘fair-weather’ painter Joe works in driving rain, mist and hail, layering water-resistant and water-soluble materials to directly capture weather conditions. He juxtaposes traditional painterly techniques with modern graffiti handstyles, to present today’s beautiful landscape in the context of the climate crisis.
Webster’s work conveys a joyful celebration of mankind and nature whilst bringing the viewer’s attention to the present through calls for a positive change in our relationship to our planet. Work created within the 120mph winds and the heatwave of 2022 explore how and when to defy or yield to the forces of nature.
Born Weymouth 1978, Webster grew up in north Cornwall. He studied with artist Carole Vincent, trained at Falmouth College of Arts and gained his BA Hons degree in Contemporary Arts at Nottingham Trent University. He deepened his studies with a Postgraduate Certificate in Art from Exeter University.
Webster exhibited in Portugal in his early career and is represented by galleries in the UK and Australia. His artworks are held in private collections in 13 countries.
Joe Webster works and lives in Devon, UK.
